OpenAI has launched ChatGPT for Teens, a dedicated experience designed to help users aged 13-17 learn and use AI safely. The service automatically activates for users estimated to be under 18 or who state they are between 13 and 17, featuring built-in safety protections and parental controls.

Key features include Study Mode, which uses guiding questions and step-by-step support to encourage active learning rather than providing direct answers. The update also introduces responsible homework reminders to detect shortcutting, quizzes, learning visualizations, and customizable Study Hours. Additionally, OpenAI partnered with CodeAI to provide resources for educators and students.

The platform enforces age-appropriate safeguards based on developmental science, blocking romantic roleplay and limiting exposure to harmful content like self-harm or violence. Parents can manage settings via Quiet Hours and receive safety notifications, while the system includes cues to prevent emotional dependence and encourage healthy usage habits.
