OpenMed 1.8 adds Android, iOS, and browser de-identification

Maintainer maziyarpanahi released OpenMed 1.8, an Apache-2.0 clinical NLP toolkit that ensures patient data never leaves local hardware. The update introduces native support for mobile devices and web browsers alongside existing desktop capabilities.

• OpenMedKit for Android enables on-device de-identification using Kotlin, ONNX Runtime Mobile, and ML Kit OCR.
• iOS Swift and React Native bridges were added to extend mobile support.
• A browser runtime allows client-side de-identification via Transformers.js with wasm and WebGPU backends.
• New features include DICOM de-identification with OCR for burned-in text, five new language ID packs, and five new clinical NER domains.
• The project hosts over 1500 Apache 2.0 models on Hugging Face, with two ranking first and second on the PII Masking Benchmark English board.

The maintainer highlights that version 1.9 is currently under development with over 400 open issues, inviting contributors to add regional PII language packs or new clinical NER domains.
