This paper presents a methodology for developing successful natural language processing systems in clinical research by applying the Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC) to data extraction projects.
While numerous resources cover specific algorithms, this work emphasizes that algorithmic knowledge is insufficient on its own. The authors propose a stepwise approach that integrates SDLC principles to guide NLP system development from start to finish.
